Kallie x Toby puppy ultrasound images.

We took Kallie to get an ultrasound at Slade Veterinary Hospital in Framingham, MA.  Slade is known for their experience in canine reproductive medicine. We were brought in to a cozy room with wood floors and a puffy couch with lots of dog and puppy pictures adorning the walls-- the room felt like a cozy family room (not a veterinary hospital). The veterinarian and technicians were very gentle laying Kallie on her back and shaving some of her tummy fur in order to take the ultrasound images. The vet was able to see 6 fetuses clearly.*

The image to the left is the clearest out of the sonograms. You can see the embryonic sac which contains the fetus. The fetus is in the lower part of the sac laying on its back. Its head is on the left side and you can see the outline of the muzzle. The wavy lines in the middle of the sac are the placenta tissue. During the ultrasound you could see the hearts beating fast-- they were fluttering like butterfly wings--it was amazing.

*Although ultrsound/sonogram imaging takes clear images (clearer in person then in photos) it is not utilized to get an exact count of puppies. The reason for this is because the dogs fur (espeically on long coated dogs like the Samoyed) can prevent images on unshaven areas. Secondly the orientation of the puppies can also make it difficult to get an exact count if one puppy is close to another. Like in the image to the right-- these fetuses are close and initially only one was seen. Note that fetal reabsorption is also common in canines so the closeness of these fetuses and the competition for space could cause one fetus to survive and the other one to be reabsorbed.
